Apple reportedly reverting to scissor switch keyboard in 2019/2020

Apple’s butterfly keys were touted by the company but fell flat with many users, including us.

Apple has been having issues with their butterfly switch keyboards for some time now and fixing them year after year just isn’t enough for some users. Now, a report coming from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, claims that Apple will end up using a scissor switch keyboard on its 2019 and 2020 MacBooks. Current problems users are having with the butterfly keys include dropped keystrokes and repeated keystrokes among other issues.

In the report, Kuo states that new keyboards will be coming out in 2019 for the new MacBook Air units and in 2020 for the new MacBook Pro units. Note, the scissor switch keyboard isn’t anything new for Apple as they used this layout before 2015. This new keyboard layout will offer better durability and longer key travel. Also with the scissor switch keyboard, they will feature glass fibers to reinforce the keys.

Kuo also states that designing the butterfly keys was expensive to manufacture due to low yields, however, the new keyboard will still be more expensive than standard keyboards but could be less expensive than the butterfly keys that Apple uses.

Personally, I think Apple should use the same keyboard mechanisms that Lenovo uses since their keyboards are really good and still offer low travel. Even though this has been reported by Kuo, it’s still best to take this all as rumors for the time being until Apple makes an announcement on the new keyboard for the latest MacBooks that will be coming out.
